Food is very much like fashion, very seasonal, one minute it’s hot, next it’s stone cold, even raw. However if you’re a foodie or someone who just loves dinning out it’s good to know what’s cooking in the kitchen.

Especially if you’re in the events industry, serving new and interesting food will set you apart from the boring old fish, chicken and beef dishes that have long reined the corporate buffet scene. Check out these hot trends for 2016-2017.

Black is the new black

Not only is this colour a staple in fashion it is also a varietal colour in the vegetable world with rich dark colours being used in salads, and vegetables served blackened and charcoaled over a fire… and have you seen the black rice? Check out your local sushi bar? Most sushi trains are now serving up black rice.

Souping is the new juicing

We love our juices, and now we can take them one step further. Foodies are seeking more texture and fibre from their fruits and vegetables. From sipping on bone broths to gazpachos, souping is high in nutritional value with amazing detoxifying benefits too.

Bowl foods (not to be confused with bowel foods)

Everything is being served in bowls. From ramen to acai smoothie bowls on the go or dinner in restaurants. Informal portions of healthy goodness tailored to personal dietary requirements and beautifully presented. Bowls are the new plates.

Fat is back

Fat is now on the healthy food pyramid, and now not a food group to shy away from. Good fats that is… Butter, avocado and handfuls of nuts.  Fats like that improve brain function and provide energy.

Knowing where the food on your plate has come from

When you go to a restaurant you will know where your food has come from, what region, farm and state. Dinners now want to know where the produce has come from, and how it got onto their plates. The need for local and fresh ingredients means many restaurants will aim to streamline their supply chains and be as transparent as possible about their suppliers and food sources.

Food apps

Expect technology to play a big part in food for 2016/2017. We all know you can order a takeaway from an app these days; technology is going to continue to dictate how we get our food in 2016. Stay tuned.
