Getting their just desserts.

I read that at an event, a crafty and innovative events planner had suspended all desserts from the ceiling with a cord to pull after the main course. Unbeknown to unsuspecting and curious event goers what was hanging from the ceiling…

When it was time to pull – what came out, or rather crashing to the table, was a perfectly formed fudge cake – while falling that is.

With a disintegrated thud everyone enjoyed their rather messy chocolate fudge cake. The cream did not follow, however what did was the banter in the office the next day at how funny and surprising dessert was.

Now this type of planning is not to everyone’s taste or would suit every event or client; however what should be your taste is the thought and creativity. While I was looking into creativity for event planning it has re-inspired and re-energised me to bring the creativity and inspiration back… it’s very contagious.

How to get inspiration

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how to get creative, but can we be creative all by ourselves? Yes and no!

I enjoy a good brainstorm session when trying to get my head around an event idea. My favourite time is with friends or colleagues.  Open a bottle of wine and throw a bunch of wild ideas out there. Then sleep on it and leave it for the morning to review what we really like and can use.

Be original

Obviously what sets apart a good event planner is their creativity. A client wants you to not only provide all details of the event they want, but also expects you to feed ideas and expand their desires for their event. Clients may come to you with no idea of how they would like their event to look and give you a blank canvas. Use your five senses.

Think about how the guests feel and what they will experience from the time they receive the invitation to being greeted at the door and walking into the room. What will they hear, see, taste, touch and smell?

There are way too many "cookie-cutter" event planners in the field that utilise the same decorations and venues. Being a creative events planner with unique ideas, decor and awesome venue options will allow you to stand out from the pack and gain additional clientele.

Let’s get creative, I know I am.
