One of the best days of the year, Boxing Day and in true traditional Australian style it will be spent, partying, relaxing, swimming, barbecuing and cricket.

The stress is finally over from all the Christmas preparations, eating, presents, family fights and clean ups. That is why Boxing Day is so enjoyable; it’s the day after the big one. It’s like the 2nd child or a second go at marriage – there are no big expectations.

So what do we Aussies like to do – relax of course? If you haven’t got your day planned or you have no plans at all, check out a few of my ideas for an awesome Boxing Day recovery.

Boxing Day/Sports Day

A couple of important sporting events are held on Boxing Day. There is a little cricket match going on…the Boxing Day test match at the MCG of course. This year it’s Australia vs West Indies. Cricket lovers from all over Australia turn up to the MCG and thousands more watch it on TV as part of their Boxing Day tradition.

Another important sporting event is the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The Bluewater Classic covers a distance of 630 nautical miles between Sydney Harbour and Hobart.  If that’s more your style for Boxing Day – enjoy!

Boxing Day sales

The Boxing Day sales have become a retail legend, a popular time to shop for post-Christmas sales.  It’s also the perfect opportunity to exchange those well-meaning but not-quite-you Christmas gifts without feeling bad about it, and save a bundle on what your heart truly desires with all the in store specials.

The Boxing Day sales are a very competitive shopping experience. If this is what you're into the day after Christmas, let’s be honest we are….Turn up early, make a list and go it alone. Ready, steady, shop!

Hit the beach

Spend Boxing Day relaxing on one of the many beautiful beaches on the Gold Coast. Head to iconic Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads or Greenmount and Snapper. Whatever beach you visit, the Gold Coast never disappoints on Boxing Day for a beach barbie, cricket and beers.

Boxing Day Race Day

After you’ve had your fill of more food than you should have eaten and all those family squabbles, why not get out of the house and go horse around trackside for the Gold Coast Turf Club’s Boxing Day Raceday.

Picnic in the Hinterland

With all that leftover food it makes sense to go have a picnic somewhere and the hinterland is a great place to ponder, look and eat turkey sandwiches.  There’s more to the Gold Coast than just the beach, with the city also famous for its glorious views.

There are plenty of lookouts that take advantage of the best spots and many include picnic and barbecue facilities as well. The “Best of All’’ lookout at Mudgeeraba is among the best and there are plenty of others, from coastal areas to the hilly Hinterland.
