Metricon Stadium – Breeze Bites

Formally known as Carrara Stadium (to locals it always will be) is the Gold Coast’s sporting venue since the Brisbane Bears (AFL) way back in 1987. The Bears moved back to Brisbane (the Gabba) and it has been used for other sports including rugby league….remember the Gold Coast Seagulls and the Chargers?

Rating - 17/20

This stadium has had more facelifts and sporting teams call it home than I’ve had a pie and beer watching the Gold Coast Sharks (another team who called it home at one point). Those teams have come and gone and one thing that has remained the same is the stadium and its ability to reinvent itself time and time again – like Madonna every decade.

It is now called Metricon Stadium following a $144 million redevelopment in 2011 into a 25,000-seat stadium and home to the Gold Coast Suns AFL club.  This great stadium is also now home (along with Carrara Parklands) to the Big Day Out in 2014. Featuring headlining acts such as; Pearl Jam, Blur and Snoop Dog – not bad.

Annnnnnnnnnnd that is not even the best part. Metricon Stadium will play host to the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as hosting the athletics events. The stadium will be upgraded again to hold a further 40,000 people prior to the start of the opening ceremony.

So with all that in mind it is also an awesome venue for events, which brings me to why I’m rating it in the first place.

Seven function rooms, each with a different functionality,

Coaches Field Club
The stadium’s premiere corporate facility. Split over two levels it is the first of its kind in Australia, with a sneaky peak to the SUNS warm-up area, and team bench.

The Chairman’s Club
This intimate environment offers an exclusive dining experience with an outdoor deck overlooking the action on the field.

The Lounge
The Lounge is not a traditional function room however it offers an indoor/outdoor experience with a barbeque terrace, deck bar and espresso bar.

The Deck
The Deck is an open air covered deck on level 3 with access to the barbeque and bar facilities.

Corporate Suites
4 suites seating 18 guests and 9 suites seating 12 guests.

Skyline Terrace
Located on Level 4 of the Western Stand this space is open air yet undercover with catering facilities - perfect location for your next social or corporate function.

Light Tower Bar
This unique bar is constructed around one of the original light towers on the eastern side of the stadium.
